The Ashikaga shogunate (足利幕府, Ashikaga bakufu, 1336–1573), also known as the Muromachi shogunate (室町幕府, Muromachi bakufu), was a feudal Japanese feudal military government. Fifteen shoguns of the Ashikaga family ruled Japan during two and a half centuries of political and social disorder. The shoguns (military dictators) would redistribute land to loyal followers but also instigate reforms which improved trade and agriculture.
