When: March 28–30
Where: Seaport World Trade Center
Every year, New England’s finest artists and designers gather at CraftBoston to display and sell their wares. The pieces from this year’s 175 participating artists range from ceramics and glasswork to wearable fibers and handmade wood furniture. But you won’t find your grandmother’s crocheted potholders or kitschy refrigerator magnets at this event: CraftBoston is an expo of modern, sophisticated and beautiful artwork. Those looking to spruce up a living space, acquire a special gift or simply enjoy museum-quality art without having to whisper should expect an experience far more pleasant than the average trip to IKEA.
Ranunculus Rainbows
When: through May 11
Where: Flower Fields in Carlsbad
Celebrate the arrival of spring with a 60-year-old San Diego tradition: the vibrant blossoms at the Flower Fields in Carlsbad. Over 50 acres of Giant Tecolote Ranunculus flowers bring a shock of color to this hillside overlooking the Pacific Ocean. This rare species in the buttercup family is bred for its striking hues and the lushness of its dense, silky petals. But the blossoms will fade after six to eight weeks, so the best time to stroll is now. In addition to poinsettias, orchids and other exotic plants, the Flower Fields hosts a miniature rose garden, a sweet pea maze and an old-fashioned tractor wagon ride.
Ringling Brothers Circus
When: through mid-April
Where: Madison Square Garden
The circus is in town! Don’t miss out on your chance to see the spectacle that makes everyone feel like a kid again. The 137th edition of the “Greatest Show on Earth” combines all the traditional sights and sounds with a new class of acrobats, artists and animals that take their performances to whole new levels (sometimes literally). And yes, there will be clowns.
Giants Opening Day
When: April 7
Where: AT&T Park
After the loss of Barry Bonds, Ryan Klesko and Pedro Feliz, there is no question that the Giants are headed in a different direction. The new line up has lots of fresh faces, and manager Bruce Bochy has the team focusing on the basics, rather than the individual glory of the Bonds era. Although their runs may suffer at first without their historic home run hitter, Bochy is confident that the changes—with an increased focus on pitching, fundamentals and coming together as a team—are for the better.
Golden Gloves
When: Daily, 7:30 p.m.
Where: St. Andrews Gym
The U.S.’s premier amateur boxing event returns to its spiritual—if not literal—home to determine who will represent Chicago in the national tournament. First held in 1923 in the Chicago Stadium and sponsored by The Chicago Tribune, the Golden Gloves effectively launched amateur boxing as a nationwide spectacle. Notable past champions include Muhammad Ali, Joe Louis, Sonny Liston, Joe Frazier and Sugar Ray Leonard. Today, the Golden Gloves is recognized as a nonprofit charity, which makes annual donations to various boxing clubs and provides college grants to boxers.
Film Festival
When: April 3–15
Where: various locations
The festival will feature 76 screenings during the first weekend alone and more than 260 films playing at six venues throughout the city over the course of the festival’s two weeks. There’s bound to be something for everyone, from serious cineastes to casual moviegoers, with special programs focusing on film noir, horror and action (as part of the popular “Danger After Dark” series), musicals and groundbreaking world cinema (including Indian, Spanish, Latin American and Muslim filmmakers). In its 17th year, this iteration should be the festival’s biggest and best showing yet.
