With the upcoming three-day weekend, we tell you where to go to make your Memorial Day special.
With our interactive page, find out the best places around the country to enjoy the long weekend.
Knee-Slappin’ Good Time
Where: Valley Center Community Hall
When: May 23 – 25
Who says cowboys don’t still live in Southern California? Drive an hour north of San Diego over Memorial Day weekend, and you’ll be transported to the Wild West for a “knee-slappin,’ toe-tappin’ good time” at the annual Western Days Festival.
Beer will be flowing at the beer garden; pies will be stacked high at the pie-eating contest; and gunfighters will shoot it out in five staged battles. To top it all off, one lucky dog will take home a blue ribbon in the sheep herding competition.
And if you still haven’t had enough, once night falls, you’ll be able to scoot your boots to a Johnny Cash tribute band.
Get Your Folk On
Where: Seattle Center
When: May 23 – 26
For a mere $10 donation, you can spend the holiday weekend with over 700 musicians, dancers and artists from indigenous cultures around the world at the Northwest Folklife Festival.
The musicians will bring their koras, harps, guitars and harmonicas, and the dancers will break out their belly dancing and Balkan styles. That means all you need to do is show up and soak it all in.
The performances come from cultures that span the globe, but a special focus will be on the rich history of the Pacific Northwest.
Road Show
Where: Wolftrap
When: May 23 at 8 pm & May 24 at 5:45 pm
Radio variety show “A Prairie Home Companion,” which for 30 years has been offering audiences its own unique blend of comedy, traditional music and sly social commentary, is hitting the road this Memorial Day weekend.
Don’t miss your chance to catch host Garrison Keillor and crew as they relocate to the D.C. area from their Minnesota home.
With lawn seats setting you back only $20, there’s really no excuse not to take part in this American institution.
Carnaval!
Where: Mission District
When: May 25
What better way to embrace the growing heat than with skimpy, feathery, brightly colored costumes? Although the official Carnaval season kicks off in February, San Francisco waits until Memorial Day Weekend for its annual display of the very best of Latin American and Caribbean culture.
So dust off your Mardi Gras mask and join the professional dancers, musicians and artists for the parade along Harrison Street in the colorful Mission district.
This event was brought to life by artists in the Mission years ago, and today is supported by the Mission Neighborhood Centers Inc., a collaborative that provides culturally sensitive assistance to low-income families, youth and the elderly.
Beach Blast
Where: South Beach
When: May 23 – 27
To add a little flavor to your holiday weekend, head over to South Beach for the sixth annual Urban Beach Week, which features a celebrity basketball game, reggae festival, pool parties and endless DJs spinning until all hours of the morning.
Over 350,000 dressed-to-impress revelers are expected for the event, which is billed as the largest urban festival in the world.
Mix in warm weather, skimpy clothing, endless beaches and beautiful scenery, and the party actually may live up to the organizer’s claim that it’s a bigger deal than the Super Bowl.
Wine-Drinkin’ Blues
Where: Chaddsford Winery
When: May 24 – 26
If you’re not in the mood to spend your Memorial Day weekend down the Jersey Shore along with the rest of the tri-state area, why not head over to the Brandywine River Blues Festival on the grounds of the Chaddsford Winery.
The Festival brings together a number of renowned blues musicians—including Charlie Donelan, James Mabry, Steve Guyger, Johnny DeFrancesco, Rob Perna and Linwood Taylor—for three days of concerts and wine tasting.
You’ll have the opportunity to sample some of Chaddsford’s nationally acclaimed wines, tour the winemaking facilities and barrel-aging cellars, and then enjoy a relaxing picnic lunch surrounded by a gorgeous landscape.
