The Reef Revolution of Jason de Caires Taylor
Jason de Caires Taylor’s underwater sculptures are not standalone pieces—they’re complete environments unto themselves.
In Issue 26, FLYP profiled the unique nature of Taylor’s work—large projects which, once installed, react with the aquatic ecosystems in which they are placed. Taylor’s latest installation plan, La Evolución Silenciosa (“The Silent Evolution”) will feature over 400 statues in Cancun’s National Marine Park. While the project is still under development, upon completion it would be one of the largest artificial underwater attractions in the world. Working alongside marine biologists and engineers, Taylor’s bold project aims to “usher in a new age of responsibility and sustainable tourism,” according to the artist’s newsletter, while also acting as a “catalyst for social change.”
