Open relationships: risky business or a trustability meter? FLYP’s Sarah Bernier finds out the truth.

By Sarah Bernier

A few things about open relationships you may not know.
- Some open relationships permit sex outside the relationship, but not romance or other long-term involvements.
- Many couples in open relationships have “rules” for what happens outside of the “primary” relationship.
- Many couples in open relationships like to have their “lovers” or “outside partners” meet their significant other from the primary relationship.
- For many couples in open relationships, the primary relationship is the most important. This means that you make the rules in the first relationship, and they are the priority. The secondary relationships follow the rules set in the primary relationship.
- Open relationships can lead to greater feelings of trust and intimacy as well as improved communication between long-term partners.
- Open relationships are not only about sex; some people crave intimacy in terms of conversation or simply time spent with people outside their primary relationship.
“What really seems important to me in relationships these days is not choosing monogamy, but choosing openness, authenticity, trust and communication.” – Susan Mernit wrote recently at BlogHer
