In the decades to come, the ability to understand the genetic code of life will change the global balance of power.
The first mapping of the human genome in 2001 set in motion what will one day be known as the age of genomics. Juan Enriquez, one of the world’s foremost authorities on how the extraordinary advances in the life sciences are changing the way we live and do business, believes this has moved us to the brink of a change as profound as the Industrial Revolution. “I think genomics is going to be the largest single driver of the global economy going forward.”
Understanding the genetic blueprint that provides the code to life has allowed scientists to begin reprogramming our genetic makeups, making possible everything from developing built-in resistances to certain diseases to the ability to regenerating limbs and organs.
And it won’t stop there. “We’re only beginning to glimpse the potential,” says Enriquez. “How would we go after diabetes? How would we go after regenerating our teeth? Or regenerating part of our arteries or veins or even a human heart? The possibilities are limitless.”
