Eight is Great
When the Olympics open in Beijing, city residents will do more than watch the games, follow the government-mandated dress code and hobnob with tourists. For the sake of numerical good fortune, thousands will pick 8/8/08 as their wedding day, as “eight” in Chinese sounds similar to the word for wealth.

Give Youth a Chance
For one day at least, all eyes will be on kids and the promise of a better future. International Youth Day will sweep the world with concerts, conferences, workshops and meetings all focused on this year’s theme: Youth and Climate Change.

Since it debuted in 1986, “At the Movies” has endured original host Gene Siskel’s death and Roger Ebert’s bout with cancer. This weekend, though, both Ebert and Richard Roeper (Siskel’s replacement) will step down. Starting in September, the movie review slot will be filled by Ben Lyons and Ben Mankiewicz.
August 14 – 17
Rover Convention
When the International Mars Society gets together for its 11th convention, the latest results from the Phoenix Mars Lander are sure to grab headlines. Also high on the agenda will be discussions on how to get NASA the funding it needs to put a person on the Martian surface in our lifetime.
