Le Tour Enters Paris

After a race that has been sidetracked by doping scandals, crashes and preparations for the Olympics, it will be interesting to see how many of the Tour de France contestants actually make it to the last stage on the Champs-Élysées—and who ends up the winner.

July 31 – August 3

Extreme Olympics

More than 300 top athletes will compete at the Summer X Games in Los Angeles in BMX, skateboarding and surfing. The events are sure to produce eye-popping stunts, like last year’s BMX Vert performance by Simon Tabron, who did back-to-back 900s (as in, two really great spinning jumps).

August 1 – 3

Kanyepalooza

This year’s lineup at Lollapalooza, the annual alt-rock fest in Chicago’s Grant Park, leans heavily on its ’90s roots, with Radiohead, Rage Against the Machine and Nine Inch Nails all headlining. But don’t worry, Kanye West will be there too, and is sure to add a little drama all his own.

August 3 – 8

Don the Red Ribbon

The XVII International AIDS Conference 2008 will be the first iteration of the event to be held in Latin America when it takes up residence in Mexico City. An estimated 25,000 people are expected to be present to find out the latest in HIV/AIDS research and treatment under the banner theme of “Universal Action Now.”

August 7

The “IT” Conference

The LinuxWorld Conference & Expo in San Francisco keeps Linux in the now. With keynotes from the leaders of almost every major technology company around and discussions on everything from applications to coding, it is sure to push the possibilities of the open-source operating system.

August 8

One World, Many Leaders

Despite activists’ pleas over China’s human rights record, world leaders will be lining up for the opening ceremonies of the Olympics. President Bush, Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda and a spat of European leaders (except for British Prime Minister Gordon Brown) have RSVPed in recent weeks.

August 4 – 10

Go Hog Wild

The town of Sturgis, S.D. (population 6,700), will swell to over a million residents for the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, now in its 68th run. Riders will pass through the Black Hills, Mount Rushmore and old mining towns, while slower-paced aficionados can revel in concerts and bike shows.

August 4

Not an Obama Boy

Journalist David Freddoso takes aim at a media darling in his new book, The Case Against Barack Obama. Sure to examine Obama’s dealings with Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Bill Ayers and Tony Rezko, it will be offered up by Regnery Publishing—the same house behind the John Kerry swiftboat swipe, Unfit for Command.
