Full Throttle

It’s estimated that over 270,000 people will be at the Indianapolis Motor Raceway for the 92nd Indy 500. After the race is run, the winner will once again celebrate with a cold glass of milk—a tradition started 72 years ago when, after his victory, winner Louis Meyer downed a bottle of buttermilk his mother had given him.

Bookworms Rejoice!

Everyone who’s anyone in the book world will be in L.A. for BookExpo America, the country’s largest book trade fair. The four-day event is the industry’s chance to showcase upcoming books, sell current titles and see what friends and foes alike have been up to over the last 12 months.

Arts in Abundance

America’s “best mannered city,” Charleston, S.C., hosts the 17-day Spoleto Festival U.S.A., the annual showcase of the best in opera, dance, classical music and theater. Over 70,000 attendees are expected to attend more than 100 performances during the event the Toronto Star called “the continent’s #1 festival.”

Green Mind

In advance of July’s summit, leaders from the G8 countries will gather in Kobe, Japan, for the G8 environment ministers’ meeting. The hope is that the ministers can begin laying the groundwork for the type of global initiatives that are needed to start getting problems like global warming and rising ocean levels under control.

Bond is Back...Again

Fifty-five years after he debuted in Casino Royale, James Bond, the world’s most famous secret agent, is back in Devil May Care. Popular novelist Sebastian Faulks does his best Ian Fleming impression in the series’ 36th volume. The new film marks the 100th anniversary of its creator’s birth.

All In

For five weeks, poker players from around the globe will converge on Las Vegas for the annual World Series of Poker. The series culminates with the $10,000 no-limit Hold ‘Em main event, which in recent years has attracted entry fields numbering in the thousands, all chasing the multi-million dollar prize.

Rogue Scholar

Chinese economist Justin Yifu Lin takes over as the World Bank’s new chief economist 29 years after he defected from the Chinese Army. Though he has not ruled out returning home, Lin, who is considered a leading candidate for the Nobel Prize in economics, still could face imprisonment if he were to go back to his native country.

Hillary’s Last Hope?

The Democrats’ Rules and By-laws Committee meets in D.C. to decide what to do about the disputed delegates from Florida and Michigan. Depending on the outcome, Clinton loyalists could claim that their candidate actually won more popular votes than Obama. Question is, are the superdelegates going to buy it?
