A lifelong violinist, Christina Courtin became disillusioned with the instrument during her tenure at the Julliard School. Feeling increasingly stifled at the prestigious performing arts school, she formed a band of her own, and soon began hitting the New York City rock stages.

Her fiery performances, ethereal voice, and unique blend of jazz, pop, chamber and country caught the attention of Nonesuch Records, who just released her debut album a few days ago.

For the full story, check out a profile on Courtin in FLYP’s special music issue.

In the video posted below, Courtin performs “Photograph” with a full orchestra in New York City on May 31, 2008.
